HOME SAFETY: KITCHEN SAFETY

HOME SAFETY
KITCHEN SAFETY:IS YOUR KITCHEN NOT A DEATH TRAP?
FIRE HAZARDS:
It was too late before my immediate senior sister realized that her kitchen was a death trap last year when on lightening a match stick to put on the gas cooker in her kitchen she set herself ablaze. One of her younger children, not conscious of safety, had used the gas cooker in the morning and failed to lock it up properly when he finished with it.The gas leaked. My sister who could not detect the odor due to her poor sense of smell aggravated by her catarrh infection at the time merely activated the time bomb setting herself ablaze in the process.(See Note 1 below) The example given above depicts the type and mode of fire occurrence in our kitchens. Fire hazards rank number one among the major safety concerns in the kitchen. This is closely followed by hazards posed by knives and sharp/blunt objects, electrical wiring and cooking devices including pots/kettles,heaters...etc,health hazards resulting from poor hygiene and carelessly leaving harmfull materials in the kitchen at the reach of ignorant children who could either take them for food or even put them into our food to complete the genocidal action. This post on kitchen safety is serialized along this line, that is:
(1) Kitchen Safety:Fire hazards.
(2) Kitchen Safety:Knives hazards.
(3) Kitchen Safety:Electrical wiring and cooking devices.
(4) Kitchen Safety:Poor Hygiene.
In continuation of fire hazards,a similar occurrence to the narration earlier made above took place in my uncle's house late last year with one of his children burnt beyond facial recognition as he tried to refill a burning kerosene stove with kerosene. The boy in question did not know that the kerosene had been adulterated with fuel (Premium motor spirit) which instantly exploded resulting in what medical personnel call second degree burn.
The electric cooker is not free from danger either. When carelessly forgotten (the cause of most fire outbreak), the electric cooker could start an electric fire, the type that had rendered myriad of families homeless. We take a look at some useful tips that could at least reduce to the barest minimum the hazards in our kitchen in the next post
Note 1:Fire Magic Automatic Timer Gas Safety Shut-off Valve is recommended for use to ensure that this ugly situation does not arise in your home Also ensure that cylinders are kept outside the kitchen.

SAFETY:DEFINITION OF SAFETY.

While the Oxford English Dictionary simply defined safety as "being safe, freedom from danger or risk," Wiktionary defined it as "The condition or feeling of being safe; security; certainty." The online encyclopedia,is as expected more elaborate. According to the Wikipedia,"Safety is the state of being "safe" (from French sauf), the condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual, financial, political, emotional, occupational, psychological, educational or other types or consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could be considered non-desirable. This can take the form of being protected from the event or from exposure to something that causes health or economical losses. It can include protection of people or of possessions." This is a broad definition of the term "safety". Still quoting from the online encyclopedia,"It's important to realize that safety is relative. Eliminating all risk, if even possible, would be extremely difficult and very expensive. A safe situation is one where risks of injury or property damage are low and manageable." We are in support of these views from the wikipedia.
However,we intend to use the word "safety" in its restrictive form in this blog to refer to freedom from risk/danger resulting from accidents either in our places of work (which could be industrial or otherwise),at home, while travelling on the road, air or waterway or while enjoying our leisure and which could adversely affect our health or properties.

Stopping Workplace Violence Before it Starts

Stopping Workplace Violence Before it Starts
Workplace rage accounts for the term, “Going postal”. This term is a reference to the 1980’s slayings of postal workers by current or former employees who acted in moments of intense rage. During a ten-year period 40 individuals were murdered in workplace violence.

In terms of present conditions there remains the threat of violence in the workplace. This may not result in murder, but it can cause intimidation and other forms of workplace abuse.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have never established violence standards for the workplace. That does not, however, preclude the establishment of safety precautions that provide an atmosphere free of exposure to circumstances that may result in physical harm or even death. OSHA recognizes violence as a ‘recognized hazard’ and employers can be cited for failing to provide their staff with a safe environment – even from each other.

Workplace Safety Training
One viable way to stem the tide of violence in your workplace is to initiate training within your company. The idea is to recognize and curtail potential violence before it takes place. That being the case, training needs to occur in areas such as interview techniques that may alert your human resources department to potential issues with a prospective employee. Training can also assist managers in identifying trouble spots that may result in workplace violence. Thirdly, training needs to take place among employees to help them understand a better way to manage their frustration within the workplace.

Areas of Concern
When interviewing a potential employee some of the red flags you may be looking for include previous jobs that may have been left off the resume, how they handled previous stress-filled situations within a work environment, how they deal with difficult co-workers, what situations make them angry, have they ever been angry with a supervisor and how they feel when they are intimidated.

These are just a few of the things you should attempt to uncover in the interview process. They can help you identify a potential violent tendency and may help in identifying areas of additional training for your staff.

Your management team needs to be equipped to identify workplace ‘red flags’ and then instructed to deal with small problems quickly. Often workplace violence is a result of ‘compound interest’. The individual who ultimately expresses violence will have an issue of origin that was never resolved. That issue resulted in additional real or perceived problems that often results in the belief that violence is a viable tool that can be used to manage the internal conflict or turmoil they experience. When it gets to this point it may be too late to meaningfully engage the employee. They may even feel that any intervention from you would simply be condescending.

The Origin of Workplace Violence
You should also understand that some workplace violence begins with circumstances outside the workplace. An employee could crack under the pressures of personal finance or situations that may be happening at home. The workplace can become the object of their frustration and wrath.

Supervisors can learn to spot those who may be considering violence as a remedy to their personal or workplace problems through a radical change in personal behavior, becoming visibly upset with routine supervisor feedback, angrily engaging fellow employees who may actually be conciliatory, being compulsive about their work and a strong interest in weaponry.

Safety is Your Ultimate Responsibility
The role of safety training cannot be minimized. It is strongly inferred that OSHA considers it a citable offense to fail to intervene in circumstances of potential workplace violence. Your team deserves a safe workplace and you have the duty to provide that environment. Sign up today for an on-line OSHA approved safety training course: Stopping Workplace Violence
