HOME SAFETY: KITCHEN SAFETY

HOME SAFETY
KITCHEN SAFETY:IS YOUR KITCHEN NOT A DEATH TRAP?
FIRE HAZARDS:
It was too late before my immediate senior sister realized that her kitchen was a death trap last year when on lightening a match stick to put on the gas cooker in her kitchen she set herself ablaze. One of her younger children, not conscious of safety, had used the gas cooker in the morning and failed to lock it up properly when he finished with it.The gas leaked. My sister who could not detect the odor due to her poor sense of smell aggravated by her catarrh infection at the time merely activated the time bomb setting herself ablaze in the process.(See Note 1 below) The example given above depicts the type and mode of fire occurrence in our kitchens. Fire hazards rank number one among the major safety concerns in the kitchen. This is closely followed by hazards posed by knives and sharp/blunt objects, electrical wiring and cooking devices including pots/kettles,heaters...etc,health hazards resulting from poor hygiene and carelessly leaving harmfull materials in the kitchen at the reach of ignorant children who could either take them for food or even put them into our food to complete the genocidal action. This post on kitchen safety is serialized along this line, that is:
(1) Kitchen Safety:Fire hazards.
(2) Kitchen Safety:Knives hazards.
(3) Kitchen Safety:Electrical wiring and cooking devices.
(4) Kitchen Safety:Poor Hygiene.
In continuation of fire hazards,a similar occurrence to the narration earlier made above took place in my uncle's house late last year with one of his children burnt beyond facial recognition as he tried to refill a burning kerosene stove with kerosene. The boy in question did not know that the kerosene had been adulterated with fuel (Premium motor spirit) which instantly exploded resulting in what medical personnel call second degree burn.
The electric cooker is not free from danger either. When carelessly forgotten (the cause of most fire outbreak), the electric cooker could start an electric fire, the type that had rendered myriad of families homeless. We take a look at some useful tips that could at least reduce to the barest minimum the hazards in our kitchen in the next post
Note 1:Fire Magic Automatic Timer Gas Safety Shut-off Valve is recommended for use to ensure that this ugly situation does not arise in your home Also ensure that cylinders are kept outside the kitchen.
